than only a few exhausting themselves giving and raising larger amounts! Some make yearly donations; others send a little periodically. Can you? Let's make this a true group effort!

Please! Please! Please! If you have questions or want to know more about OGS and how it works, ASK! If you wonder how much it would cost you to go, remember, we have budgeted $2,500 to be raised to cover the cost of a trip for each Gold Star Mother. Your cost will be similar. There aren't any add-ons. Only your individual spending (souvenirs & etc in Vietnam) will be extra. We try to keep the cost even lower when/as possible.

They Gave Their Sons and Daughters
Gold Star Mothers Pilgrimages Are Focus of New WILL-TV Documentary

As a child, Steve Prince used to creep into his grandmother's hushed, lavender scented bedroom and stare at a picture of his Uncle Percy and at a two-inch gold star engraved with Percy's name which was framed and mounted on a background of red & white silk.

Percy Stevens, 18, of Bend, Oregon had died when the American troopship Tuscania was torpedoed and sunk by a German U-boat on February 15, 1918. Prince's grandmother (Percy's mother), Laura Stevens, became part of a group of Gold Star Mothers who visited their sons' graves in Europe on government-sponsored pilgrimages between 1930 & 1933.

Prince tells his story in a new documentary about Gold Star Mothers and Widows pilgrimages. A Pilgrimage of Remembrance will tell the story of Laura Stevens. and many other mothers who made the trips. Emmy Award winning Alison Davis Wood is the producer of this new program. WILL-TV (PBS) is the broadcasting service of the University of Illinois. The Illinois Humanities Council is providing funding for this documentary.

In July of 2001, Alison Davis Wood attended the Gold Star Mothers Convention in Knoxville, Tennessee. There she met DQS President Ed Allen and learned about DQS's Operation Gold Star. While at the Convention, she was able to interview 3 of the 4 Gold Star Mothers who made the journey to Vietnam in July of 2000 as part of the initial Operation Gold Star trip. Video of the trip, provided by DQS member George Nagelschmidt, who along with Mr Allen participated in the initial OGS trip, will be included in the documentary. Just like the pilgrimages after MM, this trip provided a new sense of peace to those involved. Ms Davis Wood hopes that including the story of Operation Gold Star in the documentary will draw attention to this worthy cause.

WILL-TV plans to distribute A Pilgrimage of Remembrance to all PBS stations for broadcast on Veterans Day of 2002. Please contact your local PBS station for broadcast date and time.

**ALL DQS members are urged to contact your local PBS affiliate to encourage the showing this documentary in your area.

As you can see this is only the second time that Gold Star Mothers have been afforded this opportunity and the first time that a private organization has sponsored the effort. We are making history and YOU can be apart of it!

Others believe in the worthiness of this project. Show the Mothers that you do too!
