Subject: ZIPPO Lighters bought in Vietnam

Who else still has their lighter and maybe even still uses it? Mine had the slogan "TO REALLY LIVE, YOU MUST NEARLY DIE"...I bought it at China Beach PX. Just one of the many keepsakes. I wonder what other items bought during your Tour are considered a true treasure? There was a heavy solid brass plaque about 10 inches in diameter. I also brought home a wooden figurine about 14 inches tall of a old man with a vertical stick held in one hand. I've always wondered if the guys on later tours were confronted with the same merchandise offerings as us in 1966/1967, in I Corps? Does anyone still have their truck tire sandles, or aluminum-foil pans? Just curious...cause you could bring them to the reunion.

a lot of the figurines and such were out of the px catalogue. that, or venders that set up booths in the actual px, take your order, and send it home for you. i did that for a figurine (little oriental guy carving a tableau) and an intricitly carved round table (with 4 chairs). otherwise uniform stuff (e.g., 4/60 duster patch) and phe placques and momentos the unit gave when departing.

p.s. by my time they called them ho chi mihn sandles. they're around, but one of the straps finally broke.

How about we set up a special table at the reunion for Vietnam souvenirs?

In the highlands (in 1971)there were a lot of handmade items: crossbows, weavings, knives, embroided camo jackets, hats, bandannas, sandles, etc.

Paul; I like that 'reunion table' idea, as long as it can be guarded. I've seen recently that our old MPCs in $1.00 denominations are selling for as much as $20.00 each (Series 641), so don't foolishly just give them away. I understand too that there were about four different MPC Series issued during the war and that each new issue made all prior ones worthless (which was the purpose)...Ain't it funny how now they're worth more than ever! I still have my partially used 'PX Ration Card' and a couple of 15-inch plastic gook dolls with their little (plastic) rice hats, but I've forgotten where I packed them away to. For many years I kept my actual 'countdown calendar' but it too is currently unaccounted for.
