There are two small "ammo wells" on the front of the duster right behind the hatches. The lettering says "ammo 30 cal".

Question: what was stored in these outside storage boxes?

Paul,
The small "ammo wells" were for storage of .30 cal ammo still in the ammo can. On my track we used them to store C-Ration's still in the box.

Paul; Sounds like these could have been intended for the earlier Korean War vintage Machine Gun ammo or the M60 ammo that we had issued (perhaps identical)...and might have been in a handy location to assist, when the turret was 90 degrees to the left or toward the rear ? I haven't noticed these lately and will just have to review some photo references next.
