Try playing football on it ice with sticks and changing players on the fly.
Did you see the best Sunday game of the day on NBC? HOCKEY!
15,000+ fans made it through 2-3 feet of snow in a paralyzed city to see some of the best athletes in sports. Twentythird straight sellout of the arena.
The Penguins came from playing in Canada the day before (not two weeks ago), flew into the nearest airport (Newark) and bussed it into snowbound DC in time to make a noon starting time.
The Washington Capitals (on a 13 game winning streak)came from down 4-1 to beat the reigning Stanley Cup Champions, Pittsburgh Penguins in overtime! Their star player, Alex Ovechkin, scoring three goals (a hat-trick) in the process.
Unlike professional baseball, football and basketball, where there are more sports reporters and analysts than there are players; more commercials and delays in play than a Senate quorum call; more spin and hype than all the pundits on FOX and MSNBC combined; hockey lets you take off your gloves and fight with the other guy if you feel you have been wronged. Speed and skill, strength and endurance.
Hockey….America’s game…played by Canadians, Russians, Swedes and dozens of other immigrant countries..and some Americans too. Heck, even the French and the Swiss play hockey.
Professional football…humbug!
TAKE DAT!
(PS: I did enjoy The Who during halftime)
