"The first two place's I went to had just got over run. DEN 2 got over run-bad. It was a 155mm SP Arty unit with 6 gun's. Well, when I got there two day's later (only because our track had a bad magneto and had to be fixed). They only had four gun's left. One had it's turret blown over 300 feet away. The duster's fired all their 40mm ammo and had grabbed their M-60's and fought from the middle of the base. Finally, the gun ship's got there.
The track that took our place hit a mine going to DEN 2. When I got there it was still a lot of dead VC everywhere. I went out of the firebase and was checking thing's out when I came upon a ditch. There where about 5 dead VC in it. One of them had been hit in the gut and another was next to him had a field dressing in his hand.
On the second day a copter came in and I went over to see who it
was. It was the pilot of one of the gun ship's that were there that night
DEN 2 got over run. I asked him what it looked like the night he came to save
DEN 2. He said it was not good. He could not tell good guy's from bad
guy's. He said they just put down fire all around the base.
While I was there we just got some sniper fire. Then a week later we where at Thunder 3. Sapper's had come through on payday night. The Americans were caught off guard. The sapper's came through before they know what was going on. The sappers used a lot of satchel charges and U.S. hand grenades. And no sapper was killed. Only until we went to FSB Nancy did we get to take it easy. You go where they send you." |
